Middle School Math Events

During the Spring semester (2026), Secondary Math Coaches created and led math community events to strengthen community-school relationships while families and community members engaged in fun math activities.
The DoWEA PRISM grant, which was awarded to Madison City Schools in 2024, focuses on the initiative to improve proportional reasoning in middle school students. The grant project aims to advance students' mathematical proficiency, skills, and overall achievement while fostering partnerships between schools and the STEM community.
The first community event was a STEM night at Journey Middle School. At the STEM night, there were a number of STEM-related community partners who came out to demonstrate how STEM education directly impacts their work. There was a specific math section for this event where math team students, the math team coach, and the math coach demonstrated unique problems for students of all ages to try, as well as used various hands-on activities to model mathematical concepts.
The next community event, “Math at the Mound,” was a cross-district event for both Liberty and Discovery. This event was baseball and softball-themed and held while the schools played each other in the respective sports. Students, families, and community members had the opportunity to participate in various math and sport-related games and activities. We were so fortunate to have multiple community partners participate and help in these sessions: Redstone Federal Credit Union, Chick-fil-A, Sub Hub Gifts and Trophies, @mikeys_cards, and the RD3 Legacy Foundation.
These community math events provided meaningful opportunities for students and families to experience mathematics in engaging, real-world contexts while strengthening connections between schools and the broader community. Through hands-on activities, collaborative problem-solving, and partnerships with local organizations, students were able to see how math extends beyond the classroom and into everyday life and future careers. As Madison City Schools continues the work of the DoWEA PRISM grant, events such as these help support the district’s goal of increasing math achievement and closing learning gaps by building positive attitudes toward mathematics and creating accessible, community-centered learning experiences for all students.
