Madison City Schools and the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) celebrated the military children in our schools all month. And what a celebration it was! Events and activities included everything from the first annual Dandelion Gala, popsicle parties, popcorn parties, breakfasts, dress-up days including a district-wide Purple Up! day, poetry, and many displays highlighting military students and places they have lived. One heartwarming story resonated and became the instant highlight of the month.
A charming veteran attended a breakfast at Discovery Middle School. He was holding his camera and chatting with other adults but glancing toward the door of the cafeteria as often as politely possible. He was obviously watching for the arrival of someone special. The veteran explained that he was not waiting for a family member. He was waiting for a student who has been a member of the Student to Student (S2S) club since her days at Columbia Elementary. He fondly revealed that the two attend church together and that she had been inviting him to S2S events for years. He said,"When she gets here, she won't be shy; she'll give me a big hug." He was right. She arrived, hugged her guest, and the two friends had breakfast together. Just look at the smiles on those two faces.
